Clear Skin Tips

Clear skin remains an enigma to most of us – primarily because our skin is so different from one another. But there are some tricks of the trade that can help you no matter how different your skin is, because they address the health of your skin both from the outside and from within!

Follow these simple tips to nourish your skin from the inside out and help unveil your skin’s natural glow:

1. Carry a Water Bottle and Keep Drinking Water

Just staying hydrated alone can help you achieve the glowing skin you dream off. Just like the rest of the body, your skin gets dehydrated but as it’s a ‘low priority’ organ, your body doesn’t provide it with the first crack at the water you drink. So, drinking enough water will ensure your skin gets a generous helping, that will help flush out toxins, reduce clogged pores and help clear up your skin.

Additionally, water is the main component of hyaluronic acid and collagen - the scaffolding that holds up your skin and makes it look plump and youthful. Ensuring your skin has enough water can keep these molecules saturated and help your skin glow all day long!

Aim to drink about 2 litres of water every day to keep your skin plump and hydrated and bring out a natural glow. If you're not one to drink plain water, try out these healthy flavoured water recipes to increase your daily water intake!

2. Use Natural Skincare

Sometimes a simple skincare routine might actually work better for your skin. Overloading your skin with lots of skin care products might overwhelm your skin and cause it to break out.

Instead, try cutting out the exfoliators and serums and use a couple of skin care products with organic ingredients that focus on hydrating the skin to help repair your skin barrier so you can have dewy skin with a radiant glow. It's also important to tailor your skincare routine to your skin type.

Tips for Glowing Skin:

  • Wash your face twice a day to prevent oil build up and reduce acne

  • Use hyaluronic acid every day in your skin care (either in your serum or face moisturiser)

  • Don’t use skin care products with harsh chemicals

  • Use botanical skincare that harness plant nutrients to clear your skin

  • Use a spf 50 sunscreen every day to keep your skin protected (which leads nicely onto my next point)

3. Use a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

UV rays from the sun can harm the deepest layers of your skin, which will darken your acne scarring, dehydrate your skin and make your skin age faster as well.

Try to reduce direct sun exposure and protect your skin by applying a physical sunscreen (otherwise known as a mineral sunscreen) with zinc oxide and an spf (sun protection factor) of 50 every day so you can get glowing skin. If you aren’t a fan of the white cast from mineral sunscreens, wear a tinted sunscreen or chemical sunscreens that don’t leave a white cast on your face.

4. Don’t Be a Pimple Popper

As tempting as it might be, popping your spots can make your acne worse by spreading the bacteria all over your face. I mean, would you rather suffer through a couple days having that beady headed pimple staring back at you or go through weeks (if not months *sigh*) of red and brown acne scars adorning your face?

Leaving your pimples alone is always best. But if you still feel you need to do something for your acne, try these remedies:

  • Introduce a salicylic acid cleanser into your skin care routine

  • Use an overnight acne treatment like benzoyl peroxide gel

  • And if it’s the sight of it that’s bothering you, cover it with a pimple patch

I should also add here that you should try and reduce touching your face. Think about all the surfaces you touch everyday with your hands - that's a lot of bacteria to be holding on to which transfers directly to your face.

A simple (but often forgotten) way to clear acne is by not touching your face and washing your hands before doing your acne skin care routine.

5. Get Enough Sleep

Often overlooked in the modern world, sleep remains essential for maintaining healthy skin – I mean it’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Your skin repairs itself at night so without enough REM sleep, you will have dull skin that is dehydrated the next day.

If you find it difficult to fall asleep at night, try using a sleep aid such as a white noise machine and reduce your caffeine intake after midday.

6. Lifestyle

Your lifestyle can also hugely impact your natural glow. Healthy skin starts from within, so making sure you have a holistic approach to clear up your skin, you’ll see results very quickly. You can get clear skin by following these lifestyle tips

  • Meditate or take time for yourself to reduce stress

  • Exercise to help your skin sweat and remove toxins and bring out your natural glow

  • Reduce sugar and refined food in your diet

  • Have a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables

7. Add a Collagen Supplement to your Routine

While topical treatments are important to maintain the health of your skin, nourishing it from within can help target the deeper layers where issues such as pigmentation and scarring from acne and wrinkle formation can stem.

As I mentioned earlier, having a holistic approach to your skincare can keep it clear and glowing much more effectively. That’s why I recommend adding a supplement into your routine. They’re super simple to take and can help target multiple skin issues at the same time! Naturally I’d recommend the Raw Beauty Lab Vegan Collagen Supplement - a plant based superfood supplement that can help you nourish your skin from within.
