What Is Vollagen®?
Reviewed by Sonia, Pharmacologist · Last checked 16 October 2026
Short answer: Vollagen® is a vegan ingredient made by fermenting plants. It supplies free amino acids, the building blocks of protein, in the same proportions as human collagen. Its makers report it is 98.8% identical to human collagen in its amino acid make-up. It isn't collagen itself, because only animals make collagen. Our Luxe powder has 1,500 mg in every scoop.
What Vollagen is made of
Collagen is a protein, and every protein is a chain of amino acids. Collagen is unusually rich in three of them: glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.
Vollagen® provides the 16 key amino acids found in human collagen, in the same proportions. It's made in the UK by fermenting non-GMO corn, so no animal is involved at any stage.
| Vollagen® | Animal collagen (bovine or marine) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Free amino acids in collagen's proportions | Collagen protein, broken into peptides |
| Made from | Fermented plants | Cows' hides and bones, or fish skin and scales |
| Contains collagen | No | Yes |
| Vegan | Yes | No |
| Research | One 60-day consumer study, no comparison group | Many trials, mixed quality |
Who makes it
Vollagen® is a registered trade mark. It's made in the UK by London Pharma & Chemicals Group and sold to brands through ProTec Nutra. Other brands use it too; we chose it for Luxe because it's fully vegan and matches the amino acid make-up of human collagen.
What the research says
There's no independent, peer-reviewed trial of Vollagen® yet. We searched PubMed in October 2026 and found none.
Ayton Global Research ran a 60-day in-home consumer-perception study: people took 1 g of Vollagen® a day and reported how their skin felt. There was no comparison group. 80% said their skin felt firmer and 78% said it looked more radiant. These are people's own impressions, not measurements.
What is well established is the role of vitamin C. Your body can't build stable collagen without it (Pullar et al., 2017). That's why Luxe pairs Vollagen® with vitamin C-rich fruit. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin (GB nutrition and health claims register).
