Does Vegan Collagen Work?
Reviewed by Sonia, Pharmacologist · Last checked 16 October 2026
Short answer: Vegan collagen doesn't contain collagen, because only animals make it. A good vegan formula gives your body what it uses to make its own collagen: the amino acids found in collagen, plus vitamin C. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. Most research so far has tested animal collagen, not plant formulas.
What "vegan collagen" actually is
Collagen is a protein made by animals, including us. No plant contains it. So every product sold as "vegan collagen" is one of three things:
- An amino acid blend. It supplies the building blocks your body uses to make collagen, such as glycine, proline and lysine. Vollagen®, the complex in our Luxe powder, is one of these. Its makers report it is 98.8% identical to human collagen.
- A "collagen booster". These are plants and nutrients rich in vitamin C, which your body needs to make collagen.
- Fermented, bio-identical collagen. This is real collagen protein made by yeast or bacteria. It is still new and rare in UK shops.
Many products, ours included, combine the first two.
What the research says
- Most collagen trials tested collagen from animals, usually hydrolysed collagen peptides from cows or fish.
- A 2021 review of 19 trials (1,125 people) reported positive results for skin hydration and elasticity (de Miranda et al., 2021).
- A larger 2025 review of 23 trials (1,474 people) found that the positive results came from industry-funded and lower-quality studies. The independent, high-quality trials showed no clear effect (Myung and Park, 2025).
- Plant formulas have far less research behind them. Studies are newer and smaller, and they are often run by the ingredient makers.
- What is well established is the role of vitamin C. Your body can't build stable collagen without it (Pullar et al., 2017). That is why the UK authorises this claim: vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin (GB nutrition and health claims register).
So the honest answer: no one can promise that a collagen powder, animal or vegan, will change your skin. A vegan formula can give your body the vitamin C it needs to make collagen normally. It can also give you the amino acids collagen is built from, without any animal ingredients.
Vegan collagen and animal collagen at a glance
| Animal collagen (bovine or marine) | Vegan collagen powder | |
|---|---|---|
| Made from | Cows' hides and bones, or fish skin and scales | Plants and fermented plant ingredients |
| Contains collagen | Yes, as collagen peptides | No. It supplies amino acids and vitamin C |
| Research | Many trials, mixed quality | Fewer, newer, smaller studies |
| Authorised UK claim | Only if vitamin C is added | The vitamin C collagen claim, with at least 12 mg vitamin C per daily serving |
| Suitable for vegans | No | Yes |
| Fish allergy | Marine collagen is unsuitable | Check the label; ours has no allergens |
What to look for in a vegan collagen powder
- At least 12 mg of vitamin C per daily serving. That is 15% of the reference intake, the level a product needs before it can say vitamin C supports collagen formation.
- Every ingredient listed in milligrams. Avoid "proprietary blends" that hide the amounts.
- Vegan Society certification, so the vegan claim has been independently checked.
- Reviews from real buyers, with the count shown.
How our Luxe powder is made
Every 4 g scoop of Vegan Collagen Luxe contains:
| Ingredient | Per scoop |
|---|---|
| Vollagen® | 1,500 mg |
| Camu camu | 567 mg |
| Strawberry | 517 mg |
| Raspberry | 500 mg |
| Carrot | 283 mg |
| Sunflower seed | 233 mg |
| Baobab | 200 mg |
| Inulin (chicory root) | 100 mg |
| Beetroot | 100 mg |
The fruits give about 26–49 mg of vitamin C per scoop, well above the 12 mg level. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. It also contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to the normal function of the immune system.
What customers say: - Luxe and our Booster have a 4.8 average from 1,147 reviews. - In an independent 60-day consumer study of Vollagen®, 80% of people said their skin felt firmer and 78% said it looked more radiant. This is what people reported themselves, with no comparison group, not a clinical measurement. - Most customers tell us they notice a difference in 4–8 weeks of daily use. Everyone is different.
Prefer a fruit-only formula without Vollagen? The Booster is built around camu camu, one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C.
Frequently asked questions
Is vegan collagen as good as animal collagen?
They are different things. Animal collagen gives you collagen peptides. Vegan collagen gives you the amino acids and vitamin C your body uses to make its own. Independent, high-quality research hasn't shown a clear skin effect for either. Choose on diet, ingredients and values.
Is vegan collagen real collagen?
No, not in the strict sense, because plants don't make collagen. We explain the difference between plant, marine and bovine collagen in Is vegan collagen real collagen?
Does vegan collagen have side effects?
Our powders are made from fruits, vegetables, seeds and Vollagen®, with no allergens. As with any supplement, if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, check with your GP or pharmacist first.
How long does vegan collagen take to work?
Your skin renews itself roughly every 28 days, so give any supplement at least 4 weeks of daily use. Most of our customers say they notice a difference in 4–8 weeks. Results vary from person to person.
How do I take it?
Take one level scoop a day in water, juice or a smoothie. Vitamin C is sensitive to heat, so mix it into cold or room-temperature drinks. Our Recipes blog has smoothie ideas.
