Why do wrinkles form as we get older?

First up, it’s helpful to know why we get wrinkles as we get older - and the answer may surprise you.

There’s the obvious – the chronological passing of time, but this actually only has a small impact on why we look older as we get older. Instead, up to 90% of the visible signs of ageing are actually influenced by what you eat and your lifestyle, not the calendar.

This is brilliant news for us as it means there is so much we can do to prolong youthfulness to restore the complexion from our 20s or 30s.

So how does your diet and lifestyle stand between you and getting the skin of your dreams? Your body naturally produces collagen by using nutrients found in your diet. 75% of your skin is made up of collagen - its the stuff that keeps it plump, springy and youthful. However as you get older your ability to produce collagen declines and you also lose about 1% - 2.5% of your collagen each year. Essentially the more collagen you lose, the deeper your wrinkles will appear and the more your skin will sag.

Collagen loss by age

Why do some women age 'worse' than others?

If you’ve got a sweet tooth or enjoy a plate (or bucket) of fried food a little more than occasionally, you might be destroying your collagen without knowing it! The less collagen you have equals the deeper your lines and wrinkles.

When you eat a lot of sugar, your body essentially ‘tags’ the collagen proteins in your skin with a sugar molecule and produces glycotoxins. This disrupts the structure of collagen and marks it for destruction by your body reducing collagen in your skin and increasing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dull, dehydrated skin.

Unfortunately, it’s not just what we eat, but how we eat it *sigh* - I’m referring to our cooking methods. When you cook using high, dry heat (thinking deep frying, grilling or using an Aussie kitchen), it results in the production of our old nemesis - the glycotoxin – that will work to destroy your collagen.

Aside from your diet, things like chronic stress, unprotected sun exposure on your skin and pollution can all increase the production of free radicals – small molecules that go around poking holes in your collagen – which can disrupt its structure and cause your skin to age much faster!

What role does collagen play in helping you to look younger?

If you’ve read this far, then you’re probably aware that collagen is the holy grail protein when it comes to keeping your skin youthful. Here is how collagen works to keep you looking younger for longer:

1. Gets rid of wrinkles and fine lines

Collagen works as scaffolding to hold up your skin to keep it looking plump and elastic and essentially pushing out those wrinkles and fine lines to give you a smooth, even skin surface. Additionally, as we lose fat from our skin as we age, having a larger volume of collagen can help maintain a fuller complexion which would also reduce the appearance of fine lines and help in your efforts to age backwards.

2. Gives you a clear, all-natural glow

The lack of texture also helps your skin appear more radiant and provides a naturally glowing complexion as your skin has a smoother surface. Additionally, collagen can help reduce pigmentation and scarring by pushing healthy new cells to the surface of your skin, giving you a clear, natural glow.

3. Deeply hydrates your skin

60% of a collagen molecule is made up of water, so increasing the collagen content of your skin will naturally hydrate your skin. If you’re (un)fortunate enough to live in the dreary climate the UK boasts, the dry winds and harsh winters aren’t doing any favours to your skin. In fact, dry skin can significantly increase the appearance of fine lines, so building collagen can keep your skin deeply hydrated from within.

4. Strengthens your nails and hair

Your hair and nails are extensions of your skin, so building collagen in the skin (not just in your face but all over the body) can hep your hair and nails grow long and strong. The scalp is still skin, and while you may not have an elaborate skincare routine for it, building collagen can keep your scalp skin healthy which can help maintain healthier hair follicles, to reduce hair fall and increase strength and shine.

5. Supports joints

While collagen is most associated to your skin, it is present all over your body, including your joints. Collagen makes up the cushioning around your joints to reduce friction while moving, but with age, like the collagen in your skin, the collagen in your joints can wear away. Helping your body build collagen can maintain collagen levels in your joints, reduce them wearing away and help them stay healthier for longer!

How a collagen supplement can help you boost your collagen levels

While your body is great at producing collagen, your collagen levels start to decline with age. In fact, you lose 1% of collagen every year after your mid-twenties. But ladies, I’m afraid the news gets even worse because while 1% might not sound so bad, women lose 30% of their collagen in the first five years of menopause (what fun!).

Although the news is bleak, you can boost your collagen levels with a supplement. Collagen supplements, both plant based and marine supplements, work by providing your body with all the nutrients required to help it build it’s own collagen.

Contrary to popular belief, taking animal collagen supplements won’t directly replace your own collagen. When you ingest animal collagen, your body has to break it down into its component parts before building it back up into human collagen. Just like taking the eyes of a fish or cow and placing them in a human wouldn’t work, taking animal collagen wouldn’t magically replace your own, your body will break it down to create it’s own human collagen.

Plant-based or vegan collagen supplements work similarly to animal collagen supplements but actually do more than just providing the collagen building materials you need for youthful skin - they also contain powerful anti-ageing antioxidants that have been proven to smooth fine lines, tighten skin and boost radiance in their own right!

What type of collagen supplement should you take?

There are three main types of collagen supplements - marine, bovine and plant-based. Plant-based or vegan collagen supplements have recently grown in popularity as they contain ingredients which not only help build collagen but also help protect against collagen loss, but have also been proven to smooth fine lines and tighten skin in their own right.

Whilst marine and bovine collagen supplements will also help your body to naturally build collagen, they unfortunately aren't cruelty-free as they are made from the ground-up hooves, bones or skin of animals. The conversion of the animal by-product into a powder also requires heavy industrial processing and releases huge amounts of CO2. In addition a significant amount of sweeteners, flavours and preservatives are typically added in to make it palatable - ingredients which are not present in most plant-based alternatives.

Vegan Collagen supplements typically contain wholefood vitamins, rather than the synthetically produced vitamins found in Marine Collagen, making vegan options up to 1200% more bioavailable and better absorbed by the human body.

Vegan Collagen supplements also contain a powerful mix of antioxidants including quercetin, beta-carotene and ellagic acid which help to protect collagen from being destroyed as well as helping to lessen wrinkle depth. These antioxidants also help to support overall health and wellness to boot!

What other ways can you boost collagen?

Taking a daily collagen supplement is undoubtedly the safest and easiest option for achieving visible results. However if you're looking to take things further and aren't adverse to invasive beauty procedures, the following tweakments can help spur collagen production.

Microneedling

Microneedling takes advantage of the skin’s self-repair process by creating thousands of tiny micro-injuries to the dermis, the lower layer of your skin. This helps to trigger new collagen productsion by stimulating your skin’s natural ability to repair itself.

Numbing creams are typically used to make the procedure more comfortable, but if you're a needlephobe we suggest sticking to a collagen supplement

Thread lift

A thread lift involves inserting microscopic threads under your skin which are made from the same material as the dissolvable surtures used to close wounds. These threads help to stimulate the network of supportive collagen fibres within the skin and help to lift, tighten and renew sagging skin. The results from the PDO threat lift are typically longer lasting than dermal fillers.

Ultherapy

Ultherapy uses advanced ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of your natural collagen, which helps to restore the skin’s suppleness, as well as lifting and bringing definition to the contours of your face and neck. Whilst non invasive, its a relative painful tweakment and not one for the faint-hearted!
